“I love December as it is a month for serious reflection. January is great for inspiration and kicking ourselves into high gear. Somewhere in the middle of this spectrum we need to find a quiet space to clear our conscience and determine what we really want for the new year ahead. Today I hope to provide some guidance on how to do just that.
This process really must start with serious reflection if you have not already done so. I like to walk around the mall or crowded areas and get very still in my mind. I look around at the mom’s pushing their kids in strollers, dad’s with their sons around their shoulders, daughter’s holding their grandmother’s hand. Love is everywhere and this always seems to trigger reflection in me – for you something else may be the trigger. Once I’m in that vulnerable space I think back on all that has happened the previous year: the good, the bad and the ugly. I think about the friends I lost touch with, what I did right and what I could have done better. By considering all events of the previous year I can quickly find the instances where I feel guilt or sadness. These are the items I need to purge or heal from.
My next step is to decide how I feel about the instance. For example, let’s say I’m feeling guilt over losing touch with a good friend. We may have had a small falling out – he/she may have said or done something hurtful and at the time I had decided I didn’t need that in my life, so I just stopped returning the phone calls or emails. Now upon reflection, I’m feeling I may have been a little harsh and less forgiving than I should have been. This is the perfect example of an unnecessary weight on my heart. I need to clear this before entering into the new year refreshed and ready for new opportunities.
