Q&A: I Want to Start Writing and Helping Others, How and Where Do I Start?

I received a question from a reader who was interested in writing. She saw this site and what I am trying to accomplish through my writing. She wanted to know what she could do to get involved, start her own thing, and help others. I know many of you out there are in a similar boat – with that stirring inside. I asked her permission to share snippets of our back-and-forth conversation because I think it would be valuable for you to read.

Question: I want to start writing but I don’t know what to do or how to start. Help?

My answer:
Hey girl – Writing is the BEST!! Let’s first explore what you would want.

There are many options that can get you feeling like your really doing something great and helping people, or just even provide a quick side project to get started.

1. My first recommendation is to start a blog. https://aconsciouschoice.com and http://insightfuldevelopment.com are both “Blog Websites” that I created. One for sharing my business knowledge, one for sharing my knowledge of life lessons, decision making, etc. I write 2 blog posts a week on each blog. Some bloggers will write upwards of 6-7 times a week. The nice thing about a blog is you get to set your own pace. You can write about anything you feel to write about and eventually you’ll start getting followers and comments and interest. It’s a great thing to call your own and you’re helping people which always feels good. With a blog you can get a cookie-cutter template for free that’s very basic – but you could start writing today. Or the other extreme is to find a custom theme and have someone (like me) set up a customized cool blog in maybe a week or so.

2. You could start Googling topics of interest to you and you’ll find websites out there that are accepting guest writers. Often these are blogs as well, versus like a newspaper column. Blogging is the “it” thing. What you would do is start to see the website’s style, writing topics etc. Then, you’d write your own post and submit it to that site for review. If they like you, then they will publish your post. Then you do another and another, etc. You could “Guest Blog” for multiple sites if you wanted. An example of this is I’m a guest author for a site http://consciousdivas.com – a community of expert women on different topics. Very cool.

3. You could then go to another extreme and write a book. This is a very long and intense process that should only be considered if you are really ready to commit long-term to it. (I say this to everyone that approaches me about writing btw). Once you write the draft, you plan on editing the book several times, needing to find an editor, an agent, a publisher, or self-publish – and even once the book is published, you won’t make a ton of money on it unless you have that one-in-a-zillion ideas like Harry Potter. I do make it sound a little undesirable (on purpose so you can see if you really want to go down this road or not), but I can tell you, writing my book has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had by far.

Those should give you a few ideas of what you could do. If you wanna think about it, then let me know what you’re leaning toward, I’m happy to give a little more info on that particular idea.

Her response:
WOW! You are amazing! This is awesome stuff! I am going to do some more research and read your blogs today or when I get home tonight 🙂 and check out all the ideas. whoo hoo. I’m not ready for a book just yet ha ha so no discouragement needed. I always have had a passion for writing, but I never knew where to start or what to do. But I know I need something for ME, if you know what I mean 🙂 I would love to get into something and have an outlet. I am excited. I love your response, you are really great. Thank you so much!!! I want to really get into it more and check out the sites you mentioned.

Her response:
Amber, Thank you, You are exactly the type of person that I love! I went to your blog and was reading away. It is something that always catches my attention. When people are positive and inspirational. I could just read and read and read! Its like when you are talking its so real and I just feel like I relate so much. Its almost like you are reading my mind out loud and writing it. It was crazy. I got sucked into your life and I cant wait for your book. I was literally just blown away after I was up for hours reading your blogs.

I also went to the conscious divas site as well. I loved it! I read your blog over a week ago. It makes me feel so good inside to read what you write. I can feel your passion and its amazing.

I just wanted to tell you all of that, Amber, and let you know that I really appreciate what you are doing. It is truly an inspiration and that is the goal. You have to feel so great inside. I can’t even believe I just blabbed on that long. I just feel so passionate about it. It just seems that our views are soo similar and its very refreshing to feel close to someone’s thoughts and relate soo much.

ahhhhh just thank you thank you so much for sharing everything and being so open. I cannot WAIT for your book girl, for real, put me on PRE ORDER!!!! I want the FIRST Copy!!!!!!

The Lesson:

Help anyone and everyone, as often as you can. Take the time to respond with information that will help guide people. Share your knowledge and passion can make this world a better place. I believe in karma, treating other the way you’d want to be treated, and I believe in doing the right thing. If someone emails you asking for help, spend the time to write a response that will really help them. I’ve written email responses that took me 45minutes before and you know what? It was worth every second for the inspiration it gave others to take action. Spread the wealth – I really believe it comes back in a bigger more positive way.
